How it works
Sharesight is a new generation, online share portfolio management system designed for DIY share market investors. Sharesight is simple and intuitive to use. It is designed to provide maximum output for minimum input.
You can enter a share in a few seconds and a substantial portfolio in a few minutes.
Here's a thorough overview of how Sharesight works:
Back to top Portfolio Overview
Here you will see a summary of the shares you have entered including the price, quantity and current value of each share in your portfolio. Australian and NZ shares are shown separately and your portfolio can be reordered by clicking on any column heading.
You will see that annualised capital gain, dividend, currency and total returns can be viewed graphically and in dollars or percentages over the time period of your choice.
Back to top Share Details
To access the Share Details page select the share you wish to view by clicking on the row for that share on the Portfolio Overview page. You will see the following information is provided for each share.
- Full details of every dividend you have received
- Details of all your sale and purchase transactions
- Comprehensive performance data
- Details of all corporate actions
- Automatic accounting for amalgamations and splits
- Key financial data - EPS, NTA, P/E
- Links to the latest news about the share
Back to top Adding a New Share
When you log on to Sharesight you will be taken to the Portfolio Overview page.
To add a share click the ‘Add a New Share’ button and start typing the name or share code in the box provided. Select the share you want when it appears in the dropdown box.
Enter the purchase date and the number of shares and Sharesight does the rest. End of day purchase prices and exchange rates are provided or you can insert your own. Use the comments box to record any additional information you like.
Back to top Taxable Income Report
This report makes filling in your tax return easy. No longer will you need to hunt out your dividend statements at the end of the tax year in order to collate all the information you need for your tax return.
All the data you need is in one place. Gross dividends, imputation credits, and withholding tax information are collated and summarised in separate reports for NZ income and overseas income in a format that matches your IR3 return. You do not need to record any of this information: it is all provided automatically.
Back to top Sales & Acquisitions Report
The Sales and Acquisitions report is designed to show opening and closing balances at cost price. This report is a time-saver for anyone who is required to prepare annual accounts for a company or family trust that owns shares.
The report also provides the market value at balance date to supplement the cost price data required in the balance sheet.
Back to top Foreign Investment Fund Report
If you are a New Zealander who invests in Australian shares, the FIF report shows whether or not you are caught by the new FIF taxation rules. If you are, the FIF report will automatically calculate your taxable FIF income.
The first part of the report shows which of your shares are caught by the new rules after allowing for various exemptions. For most investors, there is also a further threshold exemption if the cost price of your overseas investments is less than $50,000. The report provides the cost price of all of your shares that are subject to FIF tax, so you can see whether you exceed the threshold amount.
If you are caught by the new rules, the report will calculate your FIF tax liability under both the Fair Dividend Rate (FDR) method and the Comparative Value (CV) method so that you can select the one that minimises your tax bill.
The first part of the report, showing whether you are caught by the new rules, is now available to all Sharesight subscribers (including free trial users). The remainder of the report is available to subscribers on the Expert plan.
